Video clips highlighting key health issues and population trends in Lanarkshire are now available on NHS Lanarkshire’s website.
In the selection of videos, NHS Lanarkshire’s Director of Public Health Dr Harpreet Kohli discusses some of the key findings of “Public Health 2010-11 – The Annual Report of the Director of Public Health”.
Harpreet said: “The report will be of interest to the people of Lanarkshire as it not only shows areas where health is improving but also where action is needed.
“Through the video clips I hope to highlight some of the key issues of public health in Lanarkshire and raise awareness of how we can all play our part in improving the health of our community.”
Some of the issues discussed by Harpreet include:
• By 2030 the number of people aged 75 and over in Lanarkshire will have increased by 72 per cent;
• More than half of all deaths, 52 per cent, in 2010 were due to cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke;
• The risk factors associated with heart disease are being reduced through the Keep Well pilot in Lanarkshire;
• Over 14,000 alcohol brief interventions were carried out in Lanarkshire to identify and help people drinking at levels harmful to their health;
• On average 3,174 new cases of cancer occur every year;
• Cancer services must be prepared for increasing numbers;
• Strategies to prevent cancer such as the smoking ban, smoking cessation and encouraging healthy lifestyles and drinking alcohol sensibly must be continued.
Videos are also available on Managing Obesity in Pregnancy, where Ashley Goodfellow, maternal and infant nutrition programme manager discusses the work being done to reduce these risks; and on improving oral health for older people in care homes – featuring Albert Yeung, consultant in dental public health.
